Legendary Lowcountry baseball coach Jerry Stoots confirmed Wednesday he was relieved of his duties by Oceanside Collegiate Academy.
Stoots said he is upset and was caught off guard by the school's decision. He'd led the Landsharks to a 20-5 record in 2021, and claims he'd been told he could set his own timetable for leaving the program.
Stoots, 73, says he wanted to continue coaching at Oceanside at least two more years.
A 2018 inductee in the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame, Stoots is the winningest baseball coach in South Carolina history, and has been enshrined in the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame since 2008.
Stoots spent the bulk of his coaching career at Stall High School in North Charleston, where he won nearly 600 games before retiring in 2012.
After his initial retirement, Stoots returned to coaching at Northwood Academy in Summerville. He'd coached at Oceanside since 2017. His teams have won more than 900 games in his nearly 50-year career.
