The Colleton County Sheriff's Office has launched a homicide investigation following the shooting death of a Walterboro woman on Wednesday night.
Sheriff's office spokesman Lt. Tyger Benton says deputies were sent to 25 Twin Oaks Drive shortly before 9 p.m.
On the scene, deputies found 24-year-old Tahara Crosby suffering from a gunshot wound. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.
An incident report provided by the Colleton County Sheriff's Office states a witness saw a black man run from the scene after the incident. The report also states that Crosby is the girlfriend of the man who called 911 to report the shooting.
That man, 23-year-old Khilil Nirek Morgan, was later charged in Crosby's death. An incident report states Morgan told dispatchers it took him a while to get to the phone and make a call, because both of his legs are broken.
It's unclear at what point Morgan became the primary suspect, but officials say he is now facing a murder charge.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
