Charleston Police have arrested a woman on a felony DUI charge after a collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist Sunday night, May 12, in downtown Charleston.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. on King Street between Sheppard Street and Engel Street, police say.

According to CPD spokesman Charles Francis, a Subaru sedan traveling north on King Street hit the bicyclist, who was traveling the same direction.

The bicyclist suffered a serious injury and was rushed to MUSC in critical condition, Francis says.

King Street was closed to traffic for three hours while investigators collected evidence and towed the vehicle involved in the collision, per Francis.

Police went on to charge the driver of the sedan, Gabriela Bennett of Mount Pleasant, with felony DUI.

Officers say she showed signs of impairment during field sobriety tests.

No records of an arrest were on file for Bennett at the Charleston County Detention Center as of 1:30 p.m. Monday.
