Wando High School's boys soccer team claimed their third consecutive S.C. 5A State Championship on Saturday night, beating JL Mann, 1-0, in three overtimes on a stormy night in the Midlands.
Play was suspended at 0-0 late in the second half because of lightning in the area. Once the game resumed, scoreless play continued beyond regulation with steady rain falling.
The stalemate finally was broken late in the third overtime, when Bennett Schilpp corralled a throw-in along the sideline, turned and fired a low kick from 30 yards out.
The bouncing shot skipped through JL Mann defenders and past their keeper to find the back of the net for the game-winning goal with 11 seconds left in the overtime period.
