Three people were shot Tuesday night outside the Colleton County town of Smoaks in an incident deputies believe was connected to illegal drag racing.

According to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, three people showed up to the Colleton Medical Center late Tuesday night.

The shooting victims, two men and a woman, had been at a community ball field near the town of Smoaks, when gunshots rang out, according to the sheriff’s office.

The men were each shot in the leg, and the woman was grazed, the sheriff’s office says.

Deputies went to the 30000 block of Lowcountry Highway (U.S. Highway 21) to investigate upon hearing of the shooting victims arriving at the hospital, and getting 911 calls reporting possible gunfire and drag racing in Smoaks area.

The sheriff's office says the area on Highway 21 is known for illegal drag racing.

According to a sheriff’s office incident report, deputies dispatched to investigate did not find evidence of a shooting or drag racing. They only found a man whose car had broken down in the area.

The sheriff’s office incident report shows a man who called 911 to report the shooting and drag racing refused to provide his location or contact deputies to provide more information.
