Charleston County deputies say their search for a suspect Thursday morning near Awendaw stemmed from a man being pistol whipped, robbed and shot at.

Capt. Roger Antonio, spokesman for the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, says the victim in the incident was leaving a store on Gadsenville Road off U.S. Hwy. 17 in Awendaw shortly before 9 a.m.

Deputies say that's when the victim claims he was hit in the head with a pistol. As he recovered from the assault, the victim told deputies he saw the suspect go in his vehicle and steal a handgun from the glovebox, then drive off in another car.

Shortly afterward, the victim says he saw the suspect lose control of his car, and which wound up in a ditch of Gadsdenville Road, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies say the victim then got in his car and drove toward the suspect, who then fired gunshots in his direction and hit his vehicle.

Afterward, the suspect reportedly ran off. Charleston County deputies and Mount Pleasant Police officers searched the area for the suspect, but were unable to locate him, Antonio says.
