Authorities say a woman who escaped police custody Wednesday night outside the Charleston County Detention Center has been found.

The Charleston Police Department says Javondrea Shaidasha McLeod, 22, was brought back to the Lowcountry after being arrested Friday afternoon in Sumter.

According to police, McLeod was being taken to jail Wednesday night, Feb. 5, on a shoplifting charge when she began yelling that she couldn't breathe.

The Charleston police transport officer stopped to check on her upon arriving at the jail, which is when officials say McLeod attacked the officer.

Authorities said McLeod, who was placed in the van in handcuffs, used her restraints to strike the male officer, and was able to escape after a brief struggle. No other inmates were in the van at the time, police said.

Authorities searched for McLeod for several hours Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.

She was located Friday and arrested with the assistance of SLED and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, police say.

McLeod will be in bond court on Saturday morning to face a magistrate on charges of shoplifting, unlawful escape, and assault on a police officer while resisting arrest.
